CONTOURECTURE

The Threshold

                   --      ‘ Splitting, Connect, Combined ’

Contourecture is sited at a village called Kampung Senari (situated at the east-north of the Kuching city) where it has its contour, that became the design of the buildings. Just as the village itself serves like a community centre, the proposed buildings are built within the site with the design itself serves as a part of the community centre. The five buildings proposed are the Homestay, Multi-purpose Hall, Library, Market + Farming, and Cafe. The most important to this site is to bring back the population and to increase the community in Kampung Senari as this site is hidden by its name under the famous villages nearby.

The Height Matters

The highest building: 18 - 20m (to be as a landmark that can be seen outside of this village)

Separated Buildings

The way of design is different, so these buildings are called the separated community centre while taking the whole Kampung Senari as the outlook of the centre. Concentration of the spaces at only one point creates problem, making only that particular place to be increased in population while the rest still stay in the dark.

The important part is to separate all the places. The increase of the height for each building marks the land and highlighted the whole village to be visible outside the area. In order to make an exploration towards the village, separation is the choice to make it back alive.

CONCEPT

HIERARCHY & CONTOUR

The concept of the buildings is taken from the land forms and contour, and its hierarchy. The nature formed buildings gives the image of living in a natural state and going in a natural flow. The contour shows fluidity with naturally formed land besides forming different stages on the land. The flow of the buildings can be seen sideways and therefore this is what it called the separated, connect, and combined. This means the contour gives different levels but they are all connected to form a line.

MODULAR

The site of Kampung Senari has a potential to be expanded. It means that there will be more houses build on the site in the future. Besides giving a sense of the buildings to be more closer to the surrounding houses, they brought a light design to the surrounding. With modular form of the design, the buildings form can be changed, detached, and move easily. Therefore the lightweight design of the buildings used the site as a design.

CHAOTIC

Chaotic design is to be seen by using the site plan of the Kampung Senari, the designed buildings are located randomly everywhere in the village and do not make any sense why the buildings should arrange in such a manner.

ORDER

There is an order form towards the building when it is seen sideways. The buildings seems not to connect to each other but the buildings are formed like a contour line when it is observed. From the highest to the lowest buildings designed in Kampung Senari, the alignment forms a line towards the buildings. It can be seen once enter the village and all the buildings seems connected.

HOMESTAY

TRANSLATION OF HOUSING

The houses in Kampung Senari are not arranged in a straight line and are placed randomly with the existing road. By translating this context to the building within a limited space, a vertical version of the Kampung Senari is created with the same meaning that is brought as a place to stay and live, and look at the life of Kampung Senari.

INSERTION OF CULTURE

With the culture from the Malays, there is an entertainment called ‘Wayang Kulit’ which is like a shadow cinema to the viewers. The homestay is completed with some parts acting like the ‘Wayang Kulit’. The opaque PE plastic as the cover of the wall makes the space act as the show that presents the movement of the human in public spaces. The ‘Wayang Kulit’ is also the culture from the Malays but it is hidden in somewhere else and therefore it is brought to the place to make this culture to be alived again.

A PLACE TO EAT

-  with  open  concept

                    &  natural  lighting

Before that there is no kopitiam or any cafeteria that is available for people to eat and improve their communcations to each other from the village and also from the city. People from the village are requesting a place to eat as if they want to eat at kopitiam so the nearest one should be a bit far from Kampung Senari.
